Gout 101
What is gout?
Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis associated with deposits of monosodium urate crystals in and around joints.
Important: Sudden joint pain and swelling can have causes other than gout. A healthcare professional can help confirm the diagnosis.
Why gout happens
Uric acid is produced when the body breaks down purines. When uric acid remains high enough for long enough, urate crystals can form and trigger a powerful inflammatory response.
Why the big toe?
The first metatarsophalangeal (1st MTP) joint at the base of the big toe is a classic site of gout. Other joints can be affected too.
Common flare symptoms
- Sudden intense joint pain
- Swelling
- Warmth and redness
- Extreme tenderness to touch
- Difficulty wearing shoes or walking normally
Gout is bigger than diet
Food choices can matter, but genetics, kidney handling of uric acid, medications, metabolic health and other factors can contribute.
